Walking
through Poverty’s Steps
In 1993, Bob and Allison Howorka began helping the hungry living in the
surrounding hills of Murray, Kentucky. In the same year their organization,
In His Steps, became one of our outreach centers. Our truckloads of food
and relief items assist them in making sure people like Charles will be
able to eat.
Charles Cope, 57, is disabled and unable to work. Earlier this year he
ran into a big problem. After spending all of the disability check on
basic living expenses Charles didn’t have enough money to buy food
for the rest of the month. His mother had recently passed away, leaving
him alone with no other family. Unless help came along, Charles would
go hungry until next month’s check came in the mail.
Thankfully, Charles saw the In His Steps weekly food distribution advertised
in the local paper. As his hunger intensified, he hoped there would be
enough for him. When Charles’ turn came, Bob graciously gave him
two bags of food and one bag of household items. Charles had enough to
last until the next check arrived! He wrote a note of thanks saying, “I
think what you are doing is great! Keep up the good work, and may God
bless you all.”
About 30 to 35 hungry individuals like Charles receive free groceries
every week. In His Steps’ sphere of influence doesn’t stop
there! Using Operation Blessing donations, they provide monthly loads
of food and supplies to approximately 40 organizations for the hungry.
Some come from as far away as 100 miles to pick up these donations. In
His Steps’ entire network helps feed 9-11,000 children and their
families every month! They also actively participate in the Back to School
and Holiday programs.
Bob, his wife and the In His Steps staff are all volunteers. The 73-year-old
comments, “God will let you know that what you are doing is important.”
There are 31 million Americans that don’t know where their
next meal will come from. Remember, $25 is all it takes to help
provide a family of four with a month’s worth of food.
