Extreme Kitchen Makeover for Orphans
The kitchen in the Liucun Orphanage and Elderly Home in China
was in desperate need of an extreme makeover. Staff from Operation Blessing
China walked into a room where the windows and doors barely hung on to
their rusty hinges. A thick layer of grease covered everything. There
were no cabinets or shelves, so clean pans, bowls and plates were stacked
on the floor. There was clear evidence of flies and mice.
Eleven senior citizens and 13 orphans call Liucun home. Caregivers did
the best that they could on an extremely tight budget. If the unsanitary
kitchen weren’t renovated soon, it was probable that food related
sicknesses would threaten weak immune systems.
Operation Blessing China partnered with EU-China Junior Managers Training
Program to renovate and buy new kitchenware for Liucum. Work was soon
underway and the new kitchen opened this past summer!
The cook was delighted with the transformation. The kitchen is now sanitary
and bright, as well as equipped with modern appliances and plenty of storage
space. "The equipment is so clean and modern," he said. "I
will take good care of the kitchen and serve the elderly and children
well."
To celebrate the completion we also sponsored a special meal for the residents.
Nutritious chicken, beef and mutton dishes were served with great excitement
because it’s rare they can afford to buy meat or eggs. Their typical
diet consists of vegetables, rice, bread and fruit.
This extreme makeover will have a positive impact on the food quality
at Liucun Welfare Home! But there is a lot more to do for them and many
other hurting people around the world. They need you.
