Understanding the Famine in Niger

Posted: August 3rd, 2005
By: Bill Horan

Operation Blessing food distribution efforts are already underway in Niger.
Niger Africa is one of the hottest places on earth. It’s a parched and dry landlocked country about twice the size of Texas. Over 11 million people live there, most eking out survival by growing what they eat.

The rainy season in Niger is short and happens mostly during August. Last August, it hardly rained at all, and most of the crops—of peas, grains, sorghum and peanuts—withered and died.

If that wasn’t bad enough, for the next several months clouds of hungry locusts turned the blue skies black, swarmed over the land, devoured most of the remaining crops and chewed up the grasses needed to feed livestock.

Can you even imagine what it might be like to live in Niger today? Hunger pains blotting out all other sensations, your children hungry and crying, no credit card, no ATM, no grocery store, and no cell phone to call 911—just heat and hunger… and death.

Operation Blessing is partnering with Humedica and the World Food Program to provide emergency feeding programs for approximately 78,000 people living in 64 remote villages.

During the next several weeks our partnership will deliver and distribute 1,164 tons of food and save thousands of lives. With your help we can do even more.

100 cents out of every dollar donated for this cause goes directly to providing food for those caught in the grips of the famine. Many people would help fight the famine in Niger if they knew how… now, you know how. Please help.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Every day, the fleet of Hunger Strike Force trucks are on the road, delivering nutritious food and essential supplies to thousands facing hunger and poverty. With your help, we can continue to impact lives and give hope to those who need it most. Consider making an online donation today.
