Mexico Medical Team Provides Over 2,000 Services!
A building stretching along the Mexican mountainside looked like broken down stables. It was actually home to migrant farmers working the fields of the Baja Peninsula, just south of California. Here, home means a 10 foot by 10 foot space where entire families live out their days in excruciating poverty. These migrant workers and their families were the reason a team of ten Operation Blessing volunteers came to Mexico.
Working in conjunction with the California-based Foundation For His Ministry, OBI recently conducted a two-week mission. Team members performed over 100 life-changing eye surgeries for some of Mexico’s migrant community. Procedures included cataract and glaucoma surgery as well as other services including corneal transplants. More than 2,000 prescription and reading glasses were freely given to children and adults. Many were able to see clearly for the first time in their lives.
As one ten-year-old girl left the clinic with her new glasses, she kept shouting, “Mamacita, I can see, I can see!” A whole new world had opened up to this precious little child. Her family could not have afforded to buy her glasses on a meager salary in the equivalent of $5 -$7 per day.
Not only did just the children receive the great gift of sight. Born with cataracts, a 60-year-old man also received surgery. For years he had seen the world as only a mass of blurred images. After surgery, he couldn’t stop staring at the trees. The leaves amazed him. “Now, I understand what the Bible means when it says the trees of the field clap their hands. It’s talking about the leaves,” he said.
Thank you for making the Mexico medical mission possible!
