Cambodian Medical Mission
Begins March 10th
Samdech HUN SEN,
the Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia, has invited a small
medical team of Operation Blessing volunteers to come to the Asian country.
Traveling from India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and the United States,
these 18 dedicated professionals all have one goal in common…to show
the Cambodian people that someone truly cares about their needs. Learn more
about this upcoming 2-week mission and whom it will serve!
Slightly smaller than the state
of Oklahoma, Cambodia is a land of paddies and forests dominated by the
Mekong River and Tonle Sap (World Fact book 2002). It’s also home
to 12.7 million men, women and children. According to 2002 estimates, each
woman gives birth to (?) almost five times; however, life expectancy is
just 57 years. Those particularly living in the poverty-ridden countryside,
lack the education and a basic infrastructure necessary to survive. A frightful
36% of the population lives below the poverty line. These are the orphans
and adults Operation Blessing has come to help.
Typically Operation Blessing sets up one temporary clinic site while
in the host country. Patients journey sometimes for days to the designated
site. This time, in order to meet the immediate needs, the mission will
take on a different approach by traveling to a different place in and
around Phnom Penh each workday. The team will provide primary medical,
dental, and optometry care in five city orphanages and four villages.
This will be the first time many of these patients of all ages will see
a doctor, get a tooth pulled, be fit for glasses or have a prescription
filled!
Operation Blessing also looks forward to working with CBN Cambodia and
New Life Fellowship’s Pastor McCaul. Each day, church members will
entertain those waiting in line for medical care with a program filled
with singing, games, coloring and videos. “We want to edify his
ministry by bringing this medical mission to the villages where NLF is
planting churches,” shared OBI’s team leader Dwight Lohrenz.
“In order to accomplish the Cambodian people’s needs, we’re
utilizing everyone together to make a team. This will not only address
the medical side of things but also leaves them in the capable hands of
local church leaders. That’s what’s going to be fun for me.”
Stay tuned for more from the Cambodia medical mission! But you don’t
have to wait to get in on the fun of breaking the cycle of suffering.
Your gift of $40 or more can help bring medical relief to those in need
around the world.
