This winter Ukraine – the breadbasket of the former Soviet Union fought to keep

Ukrainians have braved the low temperatures of Independence Square in Kiev for three
weeks. People have gathered, with flags and streamers in hand, to show their support
of presidential candidate Victor Yushchenko. As opposing sides discuss Ukraine’s
political fate inside the warm government buildings, citizens have made a city of tents
and will continue fighting the cold until their pleas are answered.
Amidst the hundreds of thousands of protestors sits a green tent that provides refuge
from the cold. Christian Hope Church and the Operation Blessing outreach center in Ukraine
have set up camp in the heart of the capital’s activity. They are providing for
the people’s medical and spiritual needs every day.
Cold and flu symptoms, as well as aches and pains are beginning to attack the crowd.
Everyday 200 to 300 Ukrainians pass through this small green tent, receiving cough and
cold medicines, vitamins, and treatment for the frost bite on their faces. A team of
seventeen volunteers and physicians help these patients throughout the day. They will
stay there until the protesting ends.
Ivan Boiko traveled from western Ukraine to voice his political opinion. He has withstood
the cold temperatures for eight days. Despite falling on the slick pavement and injuring
his hand a few days ago, he carries on with conviction. “Such events only happen
once in a lifetime,” he commented. “I’m more than proud of my country.”
Boiko was thankful for Operation Blessing’s medical tent. He was able to rest
for a moment and receive treatment for his injury.
The spirit of hope in the air is one that cannot be ignored. Boiko said it best, “I
can’t find the words to express what I feel. You have to be here to understand
this indescribable atmosphere.”
Note: On December 8th, Ukraine's parliament adopted electoral and constitutional changes
in a compromise intended to defuse the nation's political crisis -- prompting opposition
leaders to say they would lift a blockade of government buildings (Associated Press).
