DESCRIPTION
MedEx is the Medical Express program that brings out-patient medical
and dental care to communities around the world with little or no access
to basic health care. The goal is to counter the minor medical problems
of under developed regions. Rural communities and inner city neighborhoods
in the USA as well as squatter areas in most developing countries are
often without access to health care. This program was designed due to
the lack of care in these communities, which have few options for medical
assistance. It addresses the needs of medically under-served populations
by providing medical supplies, medicines, community health training and
care so that minor illnesses and injuries do not become debilitating or
life-threatening.
One way OBI works to improve medical access in areas of need is through
the MedEx Kit program. MedEx Kits are community first aid kits with enough
basic medicines and supplies to support a community of up to 200 people
so they can effectively treat minor injuries and illnesses.
DISTRIBUTION Medical kits can be distributed to local schools or community
leaders for use by the entire community.
Starter Kits are $275, which are typically placed in
countries where there is progressive movement towards development. OBI
provides enough medicines and supplies to treat the target community for
approximately 3 months. The community establishes some sort of fee structure
that enables re-supply of the MedEx kits on a regular basis.
Full Kit support is $750.00, which includes the starter
kits and quarterly re-supplying for an entire year. Full kit programs
are typically established among the poorest of the poor, and in communities
of severe persecution. Although the ultimate goal is for the medical kit
program to be self-sustaining in all communities, this will most likely
be a process in some of the world’s least developed communities.
Since the goal of OBI is to assist in the long term improvement of basic
medical access for those suffering in poverty stricken regions throughout
the world, each possible location will be carefully considered based upon
the need, community receptivity and involvement, degree of sustainability.
PARTNERING OBI is seeking partners on two fronts:
In target countries, partners who can coordinate distribution, tracking, re-supply and reporting.
In the USA, partners who can sponsor basic medical supplies for an entire community.
