Angelica’s
Family Finds Hope in the Midst of Poverty
Angelica lives in a household filled with a mass of mind-boggling activity.
The 9-year-old, her parents and two siblings all sleep in one room of a house
which they share with their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Sixteen in
all, it is a struggle for the extended family members to make ends meet in Mexico.
Angelica’s 30-year-old father manages a vegetable and fruit stand at the
local market. Every day he makes just enough money to feed his immediate family
as well as three more dollars for other bills. There isn’t anything left
over for school expenses.
Both of Angelica’s parents were not able to finish basic elementary school.
They can only afford to have one goal – feed their children. Education had
been the last thing on their minds until people from Operation Blessing’s
Back-to-School program included Angelica in their school supply and backpack distribution
right in time for school in 2003! Since then, she, her sister and brother now
have all participated in the program.
Meeting Individual Needs
As part of Operation Blessing’s Bless-a-Child program, Angélica also
regularly receives math and Spanish tutoring. During the last school period, the
determined student significantly raised her academic performance average! Children
are motivated to excel with rewards of little presents when they meet certain
goals.
In addition to participating in Back-to-School and Bless-a-Child activities,
Angelica and her siblings have received free medical check ups, dental care and
haircuts. The children’s faces lit up with smiles when they got toys and
candy during one of our Holiday of Hope events.
Blankets Take Bite Out of Winter
Most recently, Angelica’s family received blankets to ward off the unusually
and extremely cold winter Mexico is experiencing this year. Many impoverished
people have frozen to death because they didn’t have a simple blanket. We
quickly distributed 1,000 blankets to families living in the Mexican states of
México, Hidalgo and Coagula.
A Grateful Parent
“We are very thankful for the support received. Angélica and the
other kids are happy with their school tools. We do have little, that is why we
attend the program and get the medical attention, the clothes,” commented
her mother. “Angélica has improved a lot at school since she attends
the program. Thank you very much.”
