Checkmate, Haiti!

Operation Blessing opened a new school for the tiny fishing village of Medan Belize, Haiti in 2013. Since then many of the village’s children who had never seen a textbook in their lives can now read, write, and perform arithmetic. In  addition to the core classes is a special extra curricular activity. Chess. The class is being taught by the reigning chess champion of Haiti, Sanon Mondoly. Aside from the fun of learning and playing a new game, the skills and disciplines of chess have carried over into the classroom for these young students. Teachers notice an increase in concentration and planning that was not present before. The students are more patient and measured in their tasks and are using the tools they have received from chess to approach life in a more deliberate and purposeful way.
