Scriptures about Clean Water

world water day 2024

Water is a precious resource that we all need to survive. World Water Day is a day we set aside to focus on the millions of people who don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. Many rely on dirty wells or contaminated rivers and ponds that make them sick with various water-borne illnesses. And some have nowhere else to turn when their source of water runs dry.

God’s Word is just as necessary for our spiritual survival. Just like clean water, the Bible is our source for life. God uses water throughout Scriptures to give us a beautiful picture of salvation—from baptism into new life to His cleansing power that washes away sin. “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water” (Hebrews 10:22).

Without that relationship with God, we are constantly thirsty in a dry and barren land—what this world offers will never satisfy us. But Jesus can! “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).

God extended that invitation to everyone who is yearning for more to this life: “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters” (Isaiah 55:1). And He promises to give us more fulfillment that this world can ever offer. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied” (Matthew 5:6).

Jesus invites us to drink from the living water that He offers, but He also wants us to take that water to others who are in need—physically and spiritually. “And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward” (Matthew 10:42).

So, we invite you to join us in the fight for those who don’t have access to clean water on World Water Day. But let’s also not forget those who are suffering without the water of salvation. Take a moment to pray over these Scriptures and ask God who you can bless with a cup of cold water.
